“A part of why I do what I do so hard is because of legacies like the washerwomen,” said nanny Alicia Cleveland, a member of the National Domestic Workers Alliance’s We Dream in Black initiative, which centers Black, Afro-Latina, and Afro-descendant domestic workers. It inspires her to teach others about this history and “to see the resilience and determination that has always been shown by the women doing this work then — and now to want it to be something more.”
